Snow snow and more snow

New York is beautiful in the snow - I reminded myself as I forced myself out of my nice warm bed this morning. The radiator cold to the touch my breathe coming out in plumes of steam. A text promising heat by the end of the day doesn’t seem all that reassuring. As I wrapped my 35 week baby bump in layer upon layer I remember everyone telling me how lucky I was with my pregnancy timing, how much better it is to be huge in the cold of winter than the heat of summer. Ella wriggled around in my belly as reluctant to give up the warmth of the bed as I was. I briefly enjoyed the warmth of my straight from the oven leather boots - which my husband had stowed there to dry on a low heat before he went to work - before trudging out into the snow. Only a degree or so colder than the inside of our apartment the cold didn’t come as much of a shock - and the fresh powdery snow was beautiful as I walked carefully along the tire tracks in the middle of the road, occasionally stepping back into drifts to let slow moving vehicles pass. Just as I was starting to relax and enjoy the novelty though I reached Broadway - a huge diagonal street along which the icy wind flows uninterrupted. For 3 long blocks I was reminded that I should never have left the house. Once at the subway I was glad there was no-one around to see me navigate the icy steps holding onto the handrail with both hands, crab stepping sideways. Now I am here, sipping hot tea at my desk, as the cancellation calls come flooding in I am nursing an odd feeling of accomplishment, although it looks like I’ll be experiencing it alone…
