Devastating drapery

We’ve reached the draping stage of my millinery course at FIT, I’ve been looking forward to it for ages. It means we are creating hats directly onto a head block, rather than following simply the form of the block the idea is to fold, mold and wind the felt or straw around the form creating a flowing, spontaneous sculptural piece.

There is so much you can do in this way, and I couldn’t wait to get started, but I have just set up my equipment in my kitchen and had my first try and trust me it’s not easy. I’ve definitely got to work on my set up as my method of balancing my block on my thermos flask is not turning out to be quite stable enough for the job.

So until I have got my gear in order (or rather enlisted my very handy better half, Andrew) I’m staring longingly at these hats by etsian, Behida Dolic, Yellowfield7, who does a amazing job of making devastating drapery. So inspiring, and intimidatingly good.
